Keeping Downtown Beautiful
DDP’s Clean Downtown program, established in 2006, has transformed the appearance of Downtown Detroit. The program provides litter removal, graffiti removal, power sweeping and washing, landscape maintenance, and other beautification services.
Since its inception, Clean Downtown has removed 7.4 million pounds of trash from Downtown Detroit, with nearly 800 tons of trash collected in 2013. Clean Downtown also provides landscaping services on key boulevards, including Jefferson, Woodward and Washington.
Clean Downtown provides significant value to Downtown Detroit’s business community. By maintaining a clean and inviting Downtown, the program is recognized as a vital component of Detroit’s revitalization.
DDP partners with Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit to provide Clean Downtown’s workforce. Goodwill Industries provides job training, employment placement and other services to people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face barriers that have prevented them from holding onto previous jobs. More than 80% of Clean Downtown’s staff is comprised of Detroiters.
Need for Consistent Funding
Since 2006, $16.5 million in private voluntary donations made by 21 organizations have sustained Clean Downtown. While private donors have been generous, the lack of consistent funding from year-to-year jeopardizes the future of Clean Downtown. In response, DDP initiated the formation of the Downtown Detroit Business Improvement Zone (BIZ) to ensure reliable financial support. If the BIZ initiative is successful, Clean Downtown programs will be guaranteed as a permanent service to everyone working, living and visiting Downtown Detroit.
